Daniel J. Flanagan, CPA/PFS, CFP®, AEP®
Financial Advisor, Partner
“My mission in life is to help other people. For my clients, it’s a great privilege to give them greater confidence in managing one of the most important parts of their lives—the stewardship of their finances.”
Dan brings more than 20 years of financial planning, wealth management and accounting experience to his role as financial advisor and Partner at Canby Financial.
His unique combination of advisory and tax experience has great appeal among the entrepreneurs and executives who are his typical clients.
“They’re often self-directed investors who have reached a point in life where they need a second set of eyes and ears to help answer their money-related questions. Are they saving enough for retirement? When should they start taking Social Security? Can they improve investment returns without taking on too much risk? Are there ways for them to lower their taxes?” he says.
After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a BS in accounting, Dan began his career as a CPA with Tofias (now CBIZ), a regional accounting firm. There he handled audit and tax compliance work for closely held companies and their shareholders.
While at Tofias, he went to Bentley University to attain his master’s degree in financial planning. In 2000, he began his advisory practice at Tanager, an independent wealth management firm, and remained there until 2010, when he joined Lexington Wealth Management as a managing director and partner. He moved his practice to Canby Financial in 2014.
In addition to his CPA/PFS certifications, Dan is also a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional and an Accredited Estate Planner® (AEP®). A former president of the Boston Estate Planning Council, he is still an active member of that organization.
Born in Holliston, Massachusetts, Dan now lives in Sudbury with this wife, Kristin, with whom he will be celebrating 20 years of marriage in 2018. They have two daughters, Grace, 18, and Hallie, 9.
Dan’s faith is central to both his professional and personal interactions. His family is heavily involved in St. Anselm’s Church in Sudbury and Cursillo, a Catholic retreat. Dan is also an active member of CBMC, a Christian businessman’s organization.
He has always enjoyed exercise as a way to stay healthy and manage life’s pressures. In 2017, he ran the Falmouth Road Race with his daughter Grace, who loyally cheered him on at the finish line 30 minutes after she had completed the race. An avid golfer, he is always looking for advice to help him achieve his goal of breaking a score of 100. He has also coached youth soccer teams for both of his daughters.
